Aquaculture is a term used for fish
farming; that is cultivating fish,
shrimp, shellfish and seaweeds, in
controlled conditions, rather than

ABULON FARMING
Abalone is one of the most prized sea delicacies worldwide. Farming of abalone
began in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s in Japan and China. A very rapid
development of abalone cultivation has taken place in the 1990’s and it is now
widespread in many countries including USA, Mexico, South Africa, Australia,
Japan, China, Taiwan, Ireland, Iceland and others.
Abalone is slow growing herbivorous marine snails. There are over 100 species
worldwide in the same genus, Haliotis, They are found from the intertidal to the
depth limit of marine plants (approximately 80-100m), from tropical to cold waters.
Species can live in water temperatures ranging from 2°C to30°C.
Abalone are marine snails belonging to the Phylum Mollusca, in the Class
Gastropoda, which are molluscs with single shells, or no shell at all, that move by
means of a broad muscular foot.
